CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring and maintaining the health of your body, specifically the joints, nerves, and muscles, through chiropractic manipulation or “adjustment”.
An adjustment is a controlled force applied to a specific area of the body that is not moving as it should, possibly because it is “jammed”. Typically, this would be an area of your spine, but it may also be your shoulder, hip, ankle, or any other joint of the body.
Most often, it is pain that brings you to a chiropractic office.

When you experience acute pain in or around your joints or in your muscles after an injury, it is usually a result of joint mobility either being restricted or imbalanced. The muscles, in their attempt to protect the injured area, will often tighten or go into spasm, creating a painful cycle. An example of this is a sprained ankle or a strained back or neck.

Other times, it’s chronic or longstanding pain that brings you in. This may be result of an old injury many years ago or it may simply be that your posture (sitting, standing, driving etc) has created so much stress in your body that everything aches.
It may also be that you have arthritic joints, and they have reduced mobility, again feeding into the painful cycle.
Whatever the cause, Dr. Goldstein focuses on loosening the restricted or jammed joints gently, with the goal of bringing balance into the joints and the muscles. She uses a variety of chiropractic techniques, depending on your particular needs and your unique body.
Other than pain relief, other benefits of chiropractic care often include:
-
decreased muscle spasm or tightness
-
improved posture

Are chiropractic treatments safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non- invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromuscular complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?
On the contrary, patients usually feel relief after a treatment.
Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort because minimal force and pressure are used. Most patients feel immediate relief, but some may experience mild soreness or stiffness, just as they do after some forms of exercise. This is primarily due to areas that are “stuck” or immobile beginning to move.
Dr. Goldstein will often suggest walking for 15 minutes after an adjustment to keep the joints that have just been adjusted mobile. This helps with any possible post-adjustment soreness.

What is the popping sound, and does it hurt?
Often, when a chiropractic adjustment is performed, there is a release of a gas bubble between the joints and that may make a popping sound. It is simply the change in pressure within the joint. The popping sound does not hurt.
Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?
Because of the hands-on nature of chiropractic treatment, most patients must see a chiropractor several times to
benefit from chiropractic care. However, sometimes it may take only one or two visits if a problem is more recent.
In most cases, since most of us spend much of our time in a sitting position (at a desk or in a car) , we develop
postural compensations which then create stress or pain in our bodies. It takes time and repetition to change the
postural adaptations.

I am older and worried about my bones being too weak to withstand chiropractic adjustments. Can I still see a chiropractor?
Elderly patients need specialized care. There are many ways to perform chiropractic gently, and techniques that
don’t require “popping”. Older patients often have severe restrictions in their range of motion, which can be greatly
improved and pain decreased. Dr. Goldstein is very experienced at treating older patients, with excellent results.
